For many people, shopping for auto insurance usually happens at the last minute. Waiting until the expiration date or after an existing policy lapses will only increase the premium on your next rate quote. At least begin shopping 7 days prior to your existing policy’s expiration date.
Switching Insurance Companies
Is today a good time to begin saving more on auto insurance? Whether you are 4 months away or 1 month away from your current policy’s expiration date, switching insurance companies only makes sense if the saving potential is present. If you already paid for your six months up front that’s no problem. When you cancel your policy you will receive a refund for the unearned premium. Always make sure your new policy is in force before canceling an existing policy.
Canceling your Existing Policy Early
In some states you sometimes will need to pay a small fee for canceling your policy early. Usually this cancellation fee is about $25. It really depends on the Insurance company you have your policy with, and what state you live in. If canceling early means saving $300 a year, it may just be worth it.
